Biography
Dani Kouyaté is a long-time friend of Afrika Film Festival Köln, where many of his films have been shown. He was born in 1961 in Bobo-Dioulasso, studied film in Ouagadougou and Paris, and shot his first short film in 1989. He comes from a family of storytellers, and his debut feature film KEÏTA! L’HERITAGE DU GRIOT (KEÏTA! VOICE OF THE GRIOT) in 1995 was a homage to the storytelling traditions of West Africa.
With his television comedy series A NOUS LA VIE (1999) about teenagers at a West African boarding school and OUAGA SAGA (2005) about rebellious kids in Ouagadougou, Dani Kouyaté showed that he is equally adept at bringing contemporary material to the big screen. African history still remains an important
focus of his work, however. His 2001 feature film SIA, LE RÊVE DU PYTHON (SIA, THE DREAM OF THE PYTHON) is based on a legend of an African kingdom, and SOLEILS (2013) is a historical road movie. At the 2013 edition of the africologne theatre festival, FilmInitiativ dedicated a cinematic homage to Dani Kouyaté. In 2014, he assumed patronage duties at the festival. His latest film MEDAN VI LEVER (WHILE WE LIVE), which explores his own experiences as a migrant moving between two continents, will be presented at this year’s festival.
