Joakim Demmer
Biography
Joakim Demmer was born and grew up in Sweden. Following his education in photography and documentary filmmaking, he worked as a cameraman and editor in Scandinavia. From 1995 to 2001, he studied direction at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB). He then made a number of documentaries in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland for television stations such as 3sat and ARTE. With this year’s festival theme being “Land grabbing & migration”, FilmInitiativ will present his documentary DEAD DONKEYS FEAR NO HYENAS, which looks at the shady practices surrounding land grabs in Ethiopia and elsewhere. “In Ethiopia tens of thousands of people are evicted by force from their lands because of foreign investors. To the farmers and their families this means not only the loss of their sole chance to feed their families but also an irreversible loss of culture and identity. As they said: Without our land we are nothing. At the core of the film lies the question: what is our own personal responsibility?”
