Argaw Ashine
Biography
Environmental journalist Argaw Ashine was forced to leave Ethiopia because of his research into the consequences of land grabbing in his country, for documentaries such as Joakim Demmer’s DEAD DONKEYS FEAR NO HYENAS. Argaw Ashine currently lives in the USA, where he runs the platform “Wazema Radio” with other exiled Ethiopians. Argaw studied journalism at the University of Addis Ababa and development studies in South Africa. After first working at a local radio station, he spent six years reporting from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan for Africa’s largest media network, the Nation Media Group (Daily Nation). He has worked as a consultant for Oxfam and the Heinrich Böll Foundation and is one of the founders
of the Ethiopian Environmental Journalists Association (EEJA), which survived for eight years before it was banned by the government. Argaw believes that the media must be used to improve quality of life by providing information to the poorer and more marginalised sections of society. He hopes to return home in the near future. “Till then I keep my voice loud and clear, no place for oppressors!”
