Nonhle Mbuthuma

Biography

Nonhle Mbuthuma is a human rights activist from South Africa. She fights against land grabbing and the destruction of the environment in the Xolobeni region of the South African province of Eastern Cape, while also standing up for the rights of the indigenous people. The film THE SHORE BREAK impressively documents her work. In 2007, Nonhle Mbuthuma co-founded the Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC) that aims to prevent the destruction of the Wild Coast. An Australian mining company plans to open an opencast mine in the beautiful Indian Ocean coastal region, and a new motorway to make the area more accessible is also in the pipeline. The plans are putting the land and livelihoods of the region’s traditional inhabitants, the Amadiba, under threat. They are resisting. But with the investment project being worth millions, it is supported by the upper circles of the ANC government and will seemingly go ahead at any cost. Nonhle Mbuthuma received her first death threats back in 2008 and they have since become a regular occurrence. On 22 March, 2016, her colleague Sikhosiphi Bazooka Rhadebe, chairman of the ACC, was murdered in unexplained circumstances. Yet Nonhle Mbuthuma is still committed to fighting land grabbing and she will be in Cologne to talk about her work.
