Beti Ellerson

Biography

Beti Ellerson studied African Studies at Howard University (USA) with a sub-specialisation in African Cinema and Women Studies. “As a feminist”, she has always been interested in “engaging women’s issues”, and academically, she wanted to make a critical inquiry into African women’s experiences through the medium of the moving image. She has published her extensive research in her book “Sisters of the Screen: Women of Africa on Film, Video and Television” (2000) and her documentary SISTERS OF THE SCREEN: AFRICAN WOMEN IN THE CINEMA (2002), which will be screened for the very first time with German subtitles at this year’s festival in Cologne. In 2008, she founded the Centre for the Study and Research of African Women in Cinema. The centre also produces an eclectic and regularly updated blog on the subject (www.africanwomenincinema.blogspot.de).
