Biography

The Moroccan director is presenting his first feature film Pégase (Pegasus) in Cologne with which he won the main prize at the important Pan-African Film Festival FESPACO 2011 in Ouagadougou on his first attempt, after having already won at the National Film Festival in Tangiers. Mohamed Mouftakir started his film career in 1999 as an assistant director in television. In 2003 he made his first short film L’ombre de la mort, then the films La danse du foetus (2005) and Fin de mois (2007). For both films he received the Grand Jury Prize at the Tangiers Film Festival. At the Dubai Film Festival, where he received the award for best cinematography for his stunning images in Pégase, he explained in an interview with a film critic that his favourite director was David Lynch and that “he likes films that let the audience think for themselves, not spell it out for them. For me a good film is a film that is thought of and conceived in a cinematographic approach from the very beginning. The pure language of cinema has to be at its essence.”
