Biography

 Monique Mbeka Phoba was born in Belgium and spent part of her childhood in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She now lives in Brussels. She has been making documentaries in the Congo, Benin, Belgium and France for 20 years. They tell the stories behind the Congo’s dashed hopes following independence and the legendary national football team, “Les Léopards du Zaire”, who in 1974 became the first sub-Saharan country to be represented at a World Cup. Monique Mbeka Phoba also made a film about migrants in Europe and their difficult return to the Congo.
In 2010, Monique Mbeka Phoba decided to study screenwriting at the “Institut des Arts de Diffusion (IAD)” in the Belgian city of Louvain-la-Neuve and graduated with a Master’s degree. Since then she has worked on screenplays for feature films. In 2014, she made her first short film SOUER OYO.
