Biography
The singer Steven Ouma hails from a family of musicians in Mombasa, and has become well-known in his homeland Kenia as a member of several bands. Living in Cologne since 2005, even in his adopted homeland he still sings in his native language, Kiswahili. His band includes: the outstanding guitarist Mandjao Fati from Guinea-Bissau, who has toured the USA and Canada, several European countries, and African countries such
as Tanzania, Ghana, and Nigeria; Martin Kübert on keyboard, accordion, and viola, who has toured in many countries in many musical projects; bassist Bernd Keul, who has played with illustrious Cologne musicians from Anne Haigis to Zeltinger to “Schäl Sick Brass Band” and “The Piano has been drinking”; percussionist
Max Serges, who has mastered numerous African and Afro- Cuban instruments such as the djembé, doun souoroba, conga, timbales, and bongo, and who played with the Senegalese band “Senjam” that appeared at the opening of the 2006 fi lm festival; and drummer Heiko Thurm, played in the bands “The Lions” (Sierra Leone) and „Dunyabele“ (Guinea-Bisau/Deutschland) as well as concerts in Europe and West Africa. The Steven Ouma Band performed at the Afrika Film Festival for the fi rst time in 2014 and they will introduce their new Kenyan singer Cinderella Mwende – who they also recorded their CD “Mahaba” with – at this year’s anniversary festival.
