Biography

Born in Paris as daughter of a Tunisian father and French mother in 1960, Nadia El Fani grew up in Tunisia. She worked as assistant director to film makers like Roman Polanski, Nouri Bouzid, Romain Goupil and Franco Zeffirelli, before she made her first short film Pour le plaisir and founded her own production company “Z’Yeux Noirs Movies“ in Tunisia in 1990. As convicted feminist she made her first documentary about emancipated women in Maghreb (Du Cote des Femmes Leaders).
She had lived in Paris since 2002, but returned regularly to Tunisia for filming, this incudes her first feature film Bedwin Hacker, which was shown at a series of international festivals and earned her awards in Belgium, Canada and the USA.
Following Ouled Lenine, a documentary about Tunisian communists, amongst those her father, she prompted with her most recent film Laïcité Inch’Allah heated partly violent debates over secularism versus Islamism in Tunisia.
