Biography

Philip Rizk has an Egyptian father and a German mother and lives in Cairo. He attended the German school there from 1986 until 2000 and went on to study Philosophy in Freiburg and in the USA. He also periodically taught English in Palestinian Ramallah and Gaza City where he also worked freelance for German and Swiss television. After three years of reading Middle Eastern studies he finally graduated from the American University in Cairo in 2010, followed by a project at the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art in the Egyptian capital. Among his documentaries are Ramy about torture in Egypt and Pity the nation about the economic effects of increasing food prices in this North African country. Both films were made before the start of the protests in January 2011. Since then he has followed the political revolution in Egypt with his camera, joining the media collective Mosireen in July 2011.
