Biography

Jasmina Metwaly was born in Warsaw in 1982 and grew up partly in the Polish capital and partly in Cairo where she lives today. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan (Poland) and at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London where in 2008/2009 her work as a video artist was exhibited in a number of galleries. At the same time she made her first documentary for the online video magazine Crane.tv. She then went back and forth between London and Cairo. Since January 2011, as co-founder of the media collective Mosireen, she has been making videos to document the protest movement and the social situation of workers as well as shooting films for the campaign “No to military trials“. Through her work she has been invited to many events in different countries, including the Berlin Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In the spring of 2012 at the invitation of the Jugendclub Courage she and other Egyptian activists came to Cologne for the first time.
