Deon Maas

Biography

Deon Maas portrays himself as “ex-record company executive, ex-journalist, ex-photographer and ex-husband. He is author of the bestselling book Witboy in Africa. Some of his previous documentary credits include Who killed Johannes Kerkorrel? and Durban poison. He is also a multiple award winning television producer for the company that he co-owns, Meerkat Media.”
When introducing his documentary Punk in Africa at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2012, Deon Mass told the audience that he himself had been involved in the South African punk scene. The film’s website has this director’s statement: “When we started working on the idea for Punk in Africa the political angle was the thing that got us going the most. We were interested in how this Eurocentric social revolution became a bona fide political movement in South Africa and how the idea of the political revolution spread through certain African countries as the politics of those countries started demanding harder protest – Kenya after multi-party democracy was allowed in 1992, Mozambique after the civil war and Namibia after Nujoma took over.”
