Biography

Lale Akgün was born in Istanbul in 1953 and came to Germany at the age of nine. After studying medicine and psychology, she earned a degree in ethnopsychology at the University of Cologne. From 1997 to 2002, she worked on building up the State Migration Center (Landeszentrum für Zuwanderung), and from then until 2009 she was a member of the Deutscher Bundestag, where she served as deputy spokesperson for migration policy, and was the SPD party commissioner for Islam. From 2010 to 2013 she ran the International Issues and One-World Policy group within the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, and since March 2013 she leads its Fair Trade and Sustainable Procurement unit.

Akgün has published numerous articles and books on the interconnected themes of immigration, integration and interculturality, including the German-language best-seller “Tante Semra im Leberkäseland“ (2008), “Der getürkte Reichstag“ (2010), “Der Aufstand der Kopftuchmädchen“ and “Kebab Weihnacht“ (both 2011).
