Abstract
LA COLÈRE DANS LE VENT (ANGER IN THE WIND) is a very personal film by the young director Amina Weira from Niger about the destruction of the environment in her place of birth. She had the following to say about events there: “Areva (a French company) have been mining uranium in my home town of Arlit, in the north of the country, since 1976. Now large parts of the sandstorm-stricken region are contaminated. Radioactivity is not something you can see and the local population knows nothing about the risks associated with it. At certain times of the year, the entire town is covered in sand due to the strong winds. Everyone hides out in a protected place, the town comes to a standstill, all operations are put on hold. The storm causes radioactive particles to be disseminated all across the surrounding area. My father, who worked at the uranium mine for 35 years but has now retired, is the main protagonist in my film. He helped me to meet other former miners and also young people who had plenty to tell.”
