Abstract
Films by black German directors are a main focus of the African Diaspora Cinema programme. Five productions from 2008 – 2015 were selected based on the recommendation of filmmaker and author Nancy Mac Granaky-Quaye who lives near Cologne. She’s represented with two of her own works: her autobiographical short feature BEENTO recounts in a ‘real socialism’ setting how her Ghanaian father and German mother met in the GDR. KNIFFEL is a humorous exercise about black-and-white encounters within co-director Esther Donkor’s family.
Kicking off the programme, LIVE YOUR NIGHTMARE is a short film by Berlin-based director Otu Tetteh about a NeoNazi attack on a black German musician, which ends unexpectedly for everyone involved. The concluding section features videos by Cologne-based blogger Tarik Tesfu from his online series TARIK’S GENDERKRISE as well as a plea against homophobia and racism entitled DU SOLLST NICHT!
