Abstract

The film is a cinematic adaptation of the legend of Wagadu, a 7th century myth of the Soninke people, inspired by a play by the Mauritanian playwright Moussa Diagana: A snake-god rules over and protects the Soninke land. For this due he wants the prettiest and virgin girl of the village to be offered as a sacrifice to him. A young soldier goes against the annual ritual as his fiancée Sia is to be sacrificed… The film is a political and contemporary reflexion on the use of mythicism by the people of power with Sotigui Kouyaté in the role of Wakhané Sakho, Sia’s father.
Director Dani Kouyaté: “I continue to explore the multiple opportunities offered by the dramatic wealth of oral African culture… It remains for us… to listen to the men and women, who – in all stories and all legends of the world - were given little voice.”
