Abstract

Ibbe lives with his mother Kandia in Sweden. He dreams of a career as a rapper and will do anything to make his dream come true. His mother would prefer him to do something “proper”, however. Kandia starts to feel increasingly uncomfortable in her adoptive home of Sweden and the problems she has with her son intensify, so she decides to leave Europe after 30 years and return to her homeland of Gambia. Ibbe initially stays behind in Sweden alone, before surprisingly following his mother soon after. But what the mother and son experience in Gambia is far from what they expected.
In MEDAN VI LEVER, director Dani Kouyaté, who is originally from Burkina Faso and has been a guest at the Cologne festival on several occasions, has crafted a warm-hearted comedy about the universal subject of a search for identity.
The film won the Critics’ Prize at FESPACO 2017 in Ouagadougou and scooped the main prize at FESTICAPS in Burundi. It has been shown at countless international festivals, including those in New York, Montreal and Los Angeles, and won an award at the 2017 African Movie Academy Awards in Nigeria.
