Abstract

In MILLE SOLEILS, the young director Mati Diop follows the cinematographic footprints of her legendary uncle Djibril Diop

Mambety, whose 1972 road movie TOUKI BOUKI is considered one of the precursors of modern African cinema. The young

woman visits the film’s main actor, Magaye Niang, in Dakar, to find out what has become of him since and how Senegalese

society has evolved. The fascinating imagery of her award-winning documentary is reminiscent of the great filmmaker who served as a model.
