Abstract

Kara-Kara, a village originally built for lepers and today the neighbourhood of pariahs and dropouts from the town of Zinder, is famous for its youth gangs, called ‘palais’, and their violence. These undocumented youths, mostly children of lepers, have had no access to the education system. Originally from Zinder, Nigerien director Aïcha Macky investigates this gang phenomenon through the stories and scars of a group from Kara-Kara. Sinia Boy, Bawo and Ramsess reveal their past and their present, and also look towards the future. Via an intimate approach to daily life, Aïcha Macky gives a face and a voice to young people. ZINDER, the director’s second feature-length documentary, is an allegory to the richness of Niger: its young people.
