Abstract

After 27 years of undivided rule in Burkina Faso, the authoritarian regime of Blaise Compaoré was swept aside in October 2014 by a millions-strong protest movement. After the murder of the anti-colonial president Thomas Sankara in 1987, Compaoré took to power in a coup d’état. Since then he has maintained his rule with the help of his corrupt family clan and a clique of military personnel and other henchmen. UNE RÉVOLUTION AFRICAINE documents the end of his dictatorship and depicts the dramatic events during those last ten days before his demise. Those involved in the grassroots movement comment on the events (including rapper Smockey, who has been in Cologne as a guest several times), as do representatives of Compaoré’s party. The film gives us a nuanced insight into these internationally significant events that are yet to have garnered the attention they deserve in Europe.
