Abstract

This feature film doesn’t have a single line of dialogue but is nevertheless utterly compelling. The camera tracks a man who flees a sub-Saharan country and crosses the desert to North Africa. There he steals a boat to continue his journey northwards. A surrealist odyssey begins, but it’s one that ends nowhere.
THE LAST OF US won the Luigi De Laurentiis Prize for the best debut film during Critics Week at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival. The artistic director Giona Nazzaro categorised the film as "abstract and experimental cinema, adventure-filled and bordering on science fiction".
One critic wrote: "A metaphysical thriller of survival, a poetic humanistic fable, and ultimately a strong political statement on the world refugee crisis that we are currently going through." Director Ala Eddine Slim had the following to say about his film: "THE LAST OF US is a sequel to my previous films, continuing their research into the problems with borders, imaginary territories, contemporary solitude and human nature in all its facets… The problem of illegal sea crossings has existed for many years. There are those who go missing and whose bodies are never found. The lead character in THE LAST OF US is one such missing body."
