Abstract

“Tango is a sad thought that can be danced”, says a wellknown description of what is considered Argentina’s national music. But as popular as tango is here in Germany, hardly anyone knows that its music also has African roots. Angolan filmmaker Dom Pedro has sought out traces of its forgotten history in Argentina, encountering amazing facts through discussions with historians, tango fans and tango musicians, including the famous Argentine pianist Juan Carlos Cáceres, who passed away last April. According to his sources, the tango’s origins come from slaves, mostly from the Congo, who were deported to Argentina, and Uruguay and expressed their moods and

tales of woe through its music. Alongside the research on the (colonial) history of tango is a soundtrack – every bit as remarkable as the discoveries made – that traces the film from start to finish.
