Abstract

SAMIR DANS LA POUSSIÈRE is a documentary by France-based director Mohamed Ouzine about his Algerian nephew Samir who, in a mountainous region of Algeria on the border to Morocco, makes his money smuggling petrol canisters into the neighbouring country via the steep mountain paths. It’s hard work; the fumes are biting and the mules are Samir’s only company for days. The filmmaker’s fascination with the magnificent panoramic views, which he captures with masterful camerawork, seem to be lost on Samir. For him, the landscape is above all dusty and the mountains are nothing but obstacles as he sets off along the gruelling paths. Samir dreams of having a proper house and a family. There is a world between his day-to-day life and that of the director. Yet in the tranquil isolation of the Algerian mountains, a dialogue about human existence unfolds between the two of them.
