Abstract

At the heart of SOEUR OYO is the 10-year-old Godelive, who attends a Catholic convent school in the Congo in the 1950s – the time of Belgian colonial rule. It is the only secondary educational institution open to girls in the region. However, the strict western education collides with the girl’s own memories of the traditions of her grandmother.
