Abstract

A contemporary dance film produced by Angolan film collective Geração80 (Generation 80): How can questions of cultural origin and one’s own identity be expressed through dance moves? Five dancers from the Companhia de Dança Contemporânea de Angola seek to answer this question in preparation for a theatre performance, drawing on both modern and traditional forms of dance. They perform in various locations in Angola that represent important aspects of the country’s cultural history. They use public spaces – both rural and industrial – to present, through artistic means, a personal dichotomy between preserving and deconstructing traditions.
