Abstract

The village of Kafountine on the Atlantic coast of Senegal has evolved into a regional hub for non-industrial fishing. Around 15,000 people earn a (relatively meagre) living in the harshest of conditions – be it out on the fishing boats, carrying crates of fish, or processing or smoking fish. The work is all done by hand and it’s very physically demanding. Those working in the smokehouses get so much smoke in their eyes that there is a high risk of them going blind. Despite this, they continue to work tirelessly and in doing so contribute to increasing the food security in many African countries, while the competition from European trawlers and Chinese fish farms increases by the day. This film takes an impartial look at a situation that is far more complex than it may seem to an outsider on first viewing.
