Abstract

Just as Jesus did, a young woman carries a wooden cross on her back. This time it is an artistic performance in Lesotho, and the people on the streets look on curiously, angrily, sympathetically. The suffering woman’s gaze is only partially directed at the world around her: faces, landscapes, sheep, knitting hands. Shot in poetic black and white, the film features many slow-motion sequences, which are accompanied by a sorrowful lament. The painful farewell from the mother becomes a reckoning with the motherland. Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s visual poem is his personal commentary on the history and present of the small country of Lesotho, told from exile in Berlin. This experimental and visually stunning film was made entirely by an LGBTQI team and not only laments the general state of affairs in Africa, but more specifically denounces homophobia and discrimination in Lesotho.
