Abstract

MAPUTO shows the buzzing capital of Mozambique in its best and worst light: the dirty alleyways that are flooded with rainwater and the rotten rubbish heaps on the one hand, and the modern housing developments, skyscrapers and luxury apartments on the other. The city’s architecture reflects the social divide in society, which is dominated by the inequality and poverty of the large majority and the obscene wealth of a small elite. The two sides live in close company in the capital, but they are drifting ever further apart.
