Abstract

In 2003, there are brutal attacks on women on the streets of Tunis. A motorcyclist approaches his victims from behind and attacks them with a switchblade as he drives by, an act that gives him his nickname “Le Challat”, or “The Blade”. The attacks cause a great stir in Tunisia until one newspaper claims that he has been caught. After that, he is never heard of again. Ten years later, Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania gets her camera and goes on the hunt for the perpetrator. The lines between reality and fiction begin to blur, as do those between documentary-like footage and enacted scenes. The result is an astonishing mix that gives us an insight into the misogynist attitudes of men and the unresolved problems of Tunisian society.
The film was screened at countless international film festivals, including Brussels and Beirut.
