Abstract

WARRIORS FROM THE NORTH looks at Somalian families in Denmark, whose sons have decided to return. The fi lmmakers attempt to understand why the men have given up their lives in the comparatively rich Scandinavia for one of the world’s poorest and most dangerous countries in order to train as insurgents or even suicide bombers. The fi lm points no fi ngers, it simply provides reasons for why “young men who grew up in Western Europe are attracted to groups such as al-Shabaab.” Co-director Nasib Farah, who is from Somalia, ultimately
winds up in trouble with the police while shooting “simply due to the colour of his skin, and he is interrogated about his connection to terrorism.”
