Abstract

In the opening scene, a wise old man sits in front of a cave and recounts with admiration the tales of Kiriku’s heroic deeds, just as Griots – the traditional African storytellers – have done since time immemorial. Kiriku is a little boy, who barely reaches the adults’ knees. Yet he is clever and brave, and helps the inhabitants of his village near snow-capped Kilimanjaro in many ways – whether it is helping them to survive, or to fight an ogre that threatens people, or find water for the animals, gardens, and fields. But Kiriku does not just stay in his village – he ventures out to travel across deserts and jungles, discovering the beauty of Africa and encountering wild animals that inhabit the continent. His greatest adventure leads him to the evil sorceress Karaba. Only she knows the antidote that can save Kiriku’s mother, and other women who have drunk poisonous juice, from certain death. But Karaba is very dangerous.
