Abstract

In her latest documentary JEANNE D’ARC MASRIYA (EGYPTIAN JEANNE D’ARC), Iman Kamel explores the current situation regarding female emancipation in post-revolutionary Egypt. The Hamburg-based director went to a desert region alongside the Nile in western Egypt to research her film. There she found the diary of a girl called Jehanne. It told of her dreams of breaking free from the patriarchal shackles of traditional Bedouin society, and of being a dancer. Inspired by Jehanne’s story, the filmmaker also visited artists and musicians in Cairo, who fought for the democratisation of Egyptian society and who continue to fight for equality for women. The website of the Doha Film Institute, which supported the production of the film, states that Iman Kamel was influenced by Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent epic THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC from 1928, in which the main female character is executed by her patriarchal rulers.
