Abstract

Nollywood is the name given to the Nigerian film industry, which has in recent years grown to become one of the biggest in the world and which now produces more films than Hollywood. But these almost entirely comprise B-movies with dubious scripts that are generally shot in a few days and are more money-making schemes than actual film art. Independent filmmakers in Africa and also in Nigeria are therefore critical of the commercial Nollywood scene, despite the fact that some producers are now attempting to make more serious films. In the documentary JIMMY GOES TO NOLLYWOOD, Haitian actor Jimmy Jean-Louis, who himself has acted in Nollywood films, takes the audience behind the scenes of the Nigerian film industry. He lets actors, directors, producers and investors have their say and provides a self-critical and humorous insight into the phenomenon of Nollywood with a number of film excerpts.
