Abstract
Hale County in the US state of Alabama is primarily inhabited by Afro-Americans. In 2009, the director RaMell Ross moved there to work as a basketball trainer and photography teacher. During his time there he made his first documentary HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING – an intimate portrait of two Hale County residents, college student Daniel Collins and young father Quincy Bryant. Spanning a period of five years, the film is an honest and moving portrayal of the protagonists’ lives and surroundings, creating
a poetic mosaic of snapshots in a part of North America that has seldom been captured on camera. The documentary won several awards, including the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018. HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING was also nominated for an Oscar in 2019 in the Best Documentary Feature category.
