Abstract

HYÈNES is a West African take on Dürrenmatt’s famous play “The Visit”. The film is set in Colobane, a town in the Sahel, which is where Linguere Ramatou was once impregnated and then abandoned by the rich shopkeeper Dramaan Drameh. Years later she returns – “rich as the World Bank” – seeking revenge. A visually powerful critique of the glitzy world of capitalism by Djibril Diop Mambé, who was one of the fi rst West African filmmakers to develop a highly original, unconventional
style, all delightfully complemented by a score by his brother, Wasis Diop.
