Abstract
In Burkina-Faso there is a poem which says that a well-bred woman mustn`t have her eyes open. And yet, everywhere in Africa, women have their eyes wide open on their social position in the new democracies.
"Women with their eyes open" shows women from West Africa and some of the questions they are faced with. It lets their voices be heard and shows their attempts to create possible alternatives in their future and contributions to the development of their continent.
The film deals with the themes that concern these women intimately, forced marriages, excision, AIDS, the economic position of women and their political struggle. It shows an Africa rarely seen or listened to by the North, or Africa seen through the eyes of the women of West Africa.
