Abstract
One day in Egypt in 2013, filmed from the perspective of detainees inside a prison transport vehicle. After the fall of the Mubarak dictatorship, the election victory of the Muslim Brotherhood and the removal of their President Mursi in a military coup, the country falls into chaos. While the Islamists and soldiers fight on the streets, people of all political persuasions find themselves locked inside a police prison vehicle: members of the Muslim Brotherhood, Christians and secularists, progressives and conservatives, those ready to use violence and pacifists, men and women. But their being in captivity together does not bring them closer together; instead their differences only intensify the clashes.
In ESHTEBAK (CLASH), Egyptian director Mohamed Diab creates an ingeniously staged microcosm of current Egyptian society for which he received great acclaim at Cannes in 2016, where the film opened the Un Certain Regard section. Diab, who won the audience prize at the 2012 Afrika Film Festival Köln for his previous feature film CAIRO 678, had the following to say about the difficult shoot for his new masterpiece: “It was a huge challenge to set an entire film in a police van. But I love challenges.”
