Abstract

In her documentary TahaniRached introduces us to a group of homeless young women who are forced to get by on the streets of Cairo. What is impressive is the level of trust the young women display towards the director. They don't shy away from talking about their problems with the camera running, and these range from rape through drug abuse to prostitution. Their daily life is filmed through participatory observation. It is this closeness that allows Tahani Rached to produce unsentimental yet moving portraits of the marginalised in Egyptian society. For this, she has won many awards at numerous international festivals.
