Abstract

THE TRAIN OF SALT AND SUGAR is set at the end of the 1980s in a civil war-torn region of northern Mozambique. A train guarded by the military is heading towards the border with Malawi. As the supply of food has collapsed since fighting began, the train’s passengers are willing to risk their lives to exchange a few sacks of salt for sugar on the other side of the border. But some of the soldiers, who are supposed to be there to protect them, are now equally as unscrupulous as the marauding gangs lurking on the sides of the train tracks. The passengers are therefore embarking on a dangerous journey between life and death.

Director Licínio Azevedo gave the film a Western-style mise-en-scene and narrative. The result is so compelling that the film has already been shown at festivals all over the world and one critic at Locarno, after its screening on the Piazza Grande, wrote that it was “one of the best films” to be shown in recent years at the festival’s legendary open-air screenings.
