Abstract

Call me Kuchu documents the struggle against homophobia in Uganda. In 2011, as a bill is about to be passed that would render homosexuality a crime under capital punishment, David Kato (the first openly gay man in Uganda) and his fellow protesters try everything to stop the process. The brutal murder of Kato during the shooting of the film deeply shocks the community and gives their cause an even stronger and sadder imminence. In response to a wave of global protest, the draft bill is withdrawn only to be again presented in parliament in February 2012 after protests have ebbed.ns Parlament einzubringen.
