Abstract

Chanda is a 12 year old girl growing up in South Africa under ordinary circumstances. She is a good pupil and is confident of her future. Chanda’s life changes abruptly after the sudden death of her one-year-old sister and the disappearance of her stepfather. Above all her mother falls sick severely and Chanda finds herself abandoned. She has to take full responsibility for her two younger siblings. Strange things happen around her but nobody is willing to talk to her. Taboos, secrets and fear are omnipresent. Against all rules Chanda decides to break the silence and starts question- ing her neighbours.
At the international film festival Cannes the film won the “Prix François Chalais“. At the festival in Durban, South Africa, it was arwarded best feature film and best actrice (Khomotso Manyaka).
