Abstract

The Kivu region on the border between Rwanda and the Congo in 1998: Sergeant Xavier and Private Faustin are members of a Rwandan Army unit that has been tasked with tracking down a group of Hutu rebels during the Second Congo War. But one night the two soldiers lose contact with their battalion. Now they must fight their way through the jungle, alone, without provisions and without water.They face an epic journey where they are exposed to Congolese soldiers, wild animals, diseases, hunger and thirst, and must adapt their relationship with one another in order to survive.
In this anti-war film Joël Karekezi poses existential questions and highlights the bitter realities of such conflicts, such as the forced recruitment of child soldiers. But the film does not end without hope. It won the main award at pan-African film festival FESPACO in 2019.
