Abstract

In his film, Algerian director Amor Hakkar tells stories – calmly, quietly, and memorably illustrated – of simple people and their everyday problems. His multi-award-winning feature film LA MAISON JAUNE (screened at the 2010 “Out of Europe XI” festival) was about a farmer who wants to give his son a dignified burial despite the bureaucratic hurdles. His new film LA PREUVE tells the story of taxi driver Ali and his wife Houria, whose wish to have children remains unfulfilled. Because Algeria’s macho society just does not allow certain things, Ali secretly drives to another city to test his fertility. Through this check-up and his encounter with a female hitchhiker on the way home, his life is turned upside down.
“Down-to-earth and dignified”, said a critic, adding that the film touches on “a taboo in Algerian society” that shows what dramatic consequences can arise from false shame and inherited prejudices.
