Abstract

DIFFICULT LOVE is a documentary film by, and featuring the South African artist and activist Zanele Muholi. Her photographs reflect power and violence in South Africa as well as the oppression of black women. Yet they also broach the issue of same-sex intimacy and love. The film documents the gap between the realities of life for lesbian women in today’s South African society, and the country’s official self-image, in whose constitution the protection of sexual minorities is strongly anchored.

Zanele Muholi describes herself as a “visual activist”, as it is her explicit political goal to raise the “invisibility” of queer, black society in South Africa through her dedicated photography. A short version of this documentary film was shown in 2012 at the dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel.
