Abstract

"Africa is not poor, it is being pauperized" says the former Minister of Culture of Mali, Aminata Traoré. The rich countries of the North profit from this pauperization and at the same time they are barricading themselves more and more against migration from the South and East. Leona Goldstein, a documentary film maker from Berlin, shows the political and economic background that motivates people to migrate, taking the West African states of Mali, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast as examples, always keeping the unequal relationship between Africa and Europe in mind. For example: the pressure of the world market on cocoa prices lead to a deep economic crisis in Ivory Coast, the world`s biggest cocoa producer. After two military coups a war breaks out, hundreds of thousands of people have to flee. Most refugees stay in the country, or end up in the neighboring states of Mali and Burkina Faso.
