Abstract

BUDDHA IN AFRICA portrays the lives of orphaned children who receive a strict Buddhist upbringing at a Chinese boarding school in Malawi. They learn Kung Fu, Mandarin, and how to eat with chopsticks. Fifteen-year-old Enock, once the boarding school’s star pupil, feels increasingly torn between two worlds. He is drawn back to the village where his grandmother and aunts live. But he now speaks Mandarin better than his mother tongue. He must decide between studying in Taiwan or Malawi. A Chinese education could lead to a good job – in China or Africa. But would that mean denying his Malawian heritage? BUDDHA IN AFRICA documents current developments in a globalised world.
