Abstract

Boualem is a young baker from Bab el-Oued, Algiers’ turbulent historic district. He works through the night and sleeps during the day. One afternoon he is woken up by Imam Rabah’s sermon, which is being transmitted from a loudspeaker right in front of his house. In an uncontrolled fit of rage, he tears down the speaker and later throws it into the sea. He is at a loss to explain his actions which have the whole neighbourhood up in arms. (EZEF)

The film is a North African cinema classic. It explores the hopes and dreams of young Algerians and provides an insight into the social backdrop of the violent clashes that shook Algeria from the end of the 1980s. BAB EL-OUED CITY was screened at Cannes in 1994 and won the FIPRESCI Award.
