Abstract

Based on the internationally-successful six-part comic of the same name by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie, this animation tells the story of a young woman called Aya who lives in Yop City, a lively district of Abidjan. There, Aya tries not only to prevail over her father’s arch-conservative views, but to also provide imaginative help and advice to her friends in matters of love and life. A highly original animated film with great attention to details about social disparities, patriarchy and emancipation in a West African country such as the Ivory Coast.
The film enjoyed success at international festivals including Helsinki, Gijón and Tokyo, and was nominated Best Animated Film at the French César Awards in 2013.
