Abstract

In her feature-length documentary, Kenyan-born US-based director Peres Owino addresses the virtually unknown tensions between long-established Afro-Americans and recently immigrated Africans. How do both groups view and understand each other in the Unites States? However, the filmmaker doesn’t just explore her protagonists’ personal experiences of getting on with each other; she also discusses the history of the slave trade, colonialism and racism with its severe consequences for societies both in Africa and on the American continent. Rather than stressing existing reservations between African migrants and Afro-Americans, she focuses on their similarities and initialises a process of mutual understanding. This leads to gripping historical and current debates between

both sides, also encouraging viewers to refl ect on their own relationship with others and their own preconceptions.

The film won (audience) awards at fi lm festivals in New York and Seattle.
