Abstract
THE BLACK DAY IN WHITE CROSS SQUARE is a documentary about the last day of the refugee camp on Weißekreuzplatz in Hannover. In order to protest against their imminent deportation, refugees from Sudan joined forces with supporters to occupy the square for almost two years. The Sudanese set up the camp to raise awareness for their uncertain status in Germany and the political situation in their homeland. Local residents and the City initially tolerated the demonstrative occupation. But when the majority of those occupying the square left to have a meeting with the district mayor regarding their future, police cordoned off the camp and began the brutal eviction. Abbas Yassin was there with his camera, while Maissara Saeed protested against the move in his capacity as camp spokesperson.
